SHSU"S History of Track and Field Success

By Ryan Welch The Sam Houston State University Track and Field Program has a long history of success. SHSU has won 20 Southland Trophies for Track and Field since 2005. Head Coach David Self gives the credit to his coaching staff and the quality of athletes at SHSU.

​“I always attribute it to the staff. It’s been a history of a staff that is really dedicated to what we want to do and success. We don’t really need any external motivation; we are all very very motivated individual coaches. And it comes with recruiting a special kind of athlete that understands what we are trying to do. “

This year SHSU sent three of the nation's top Track and field athletes to the NCAA Indoor Championship. Sam Houston State University's Track and Filed team competes with every Division One level university in the Nation at the championship level.

The men's team won the Indoor Championship help in Birmingham Alabama in February. The Outdoor Season concludes in Natchitoches Louisiana on May 5, 2019.
