Congressman Kevin Brady held a “Coffee with Kevin” meeting at the Farmhouse Café in Huntsville on Tuesday morning. The gathering was an informal way for Brady to meet with the Community and local Republican leaders and to talk about legislation, answer questions, and hear concerns.
Kevin Brady represents the 8th District of Texas in the U.S. House of Representatives. Representative Brady is the lead Republican on the House Ways and Means Committee, which is considered by many to be the most powerful committee in Congress with jurisdiction over taxes, health care, Social Security, Medicare, international trade and welfare.
After Congressman Brady met with the people in attendance he spoke about trade, tariffs, legislation, and issues on the minds of Texans.
Congressman Brady said, “One of the more dangerous proposals I’ve seen in a long time, and I’ve seen a lot of them, is Medicare For All. It comes through the Ways and Means Committee. Look, our healthcare system needs improvement, but it has a lot of good things going for it. We need to keep what is working and fix what is broken, but starting over with a Socialist system where Washington politicians and bureaucrats make your key healthcare decisions, that is dangerous for Americans.”
Brady told those in attendance that Medicare For All has a majority of House Democrats as co-sponsors for the House Bill. Brady went on to say that if Medicare For All passed it would cancel the medical insurance plans of 600,000 people in Congressional District 8 alone. Brady said, “It bans employers from offering healthcare plans to their employees. It ends Tricare for our military men and women, and even ends Medicare as we know it.”
Brady went on to explain that even if everyone’s taxes were doubled, it would not pay for Medicare For All. “The average cost for an American family would be between $24,000 and $40,000 per year” Brady said.
Brady also talked about the recent mass shootings and criticized the people who blamed President Trump and not the person who committed the mass shootings. He talked about the shooting in Gilroy California and that it happened despite the strict California gun laws. Brady said, “As tragic as it was in El Paso, and Dayton Ohio, for the life of me, I don’t understand why the media doesn’t point out the third shooting we had last week in California, in Gilroy, where 18 people at that festival were shot or killed.”
Brady seemed to support the controversial red-flag laws when he said, “We got to find a better way, when these early warning signs are all over, to step in and stop it.”
Representative Brady lives in Montgomery County with his wife Cathy and his two sons.
